It is estimated that more than half of the human population, plus a much greater number of domestic and wild animals suffer from parasitic infections. In addition to their relevance in human and animal health, parasites have become the object of extensive studies by cellular and molecular biologists. A parasite can be considered to be the device of a nucleic acid which allows it to exploit the gene products of other nucleic acid the host organisms.
In this laboratory, we extract the parasite genome and parasite proteins, as well as identify the strains and study the parasite phylogeny.
We also study the effects of herbal medicines on parasites.
